About Ohio Adventist Christian Fellowship

Here’s a surprising fact: Did you know that 65% of Seventh-day Adventist young people attend secular colleges or universities? Studying at a secular college or university presents challenges to a student’s faith. Being at college may be his or her first time making decisions of their own, without mom and dad there to guide them. University studies are stressful, and social pressures are strong. The Ohio Conference has long hoped to minister to students—Seventh-day Adventists and others—on secular campuses. In September, we started a pilot program to place chaplains at three of our state’s universities: Ohio University in Athens, The Ohio State University in Columbus, and Wright State University in Dayton. Here are some of their experiences.

Good Works Homeless Walk

On a cold brisk Saturday morning hundreds of people gathered for a walk to raise awareness and support for those battling poverty in Athens County. The walk is organized by a great organization known as Good Works. Our church and campus group have both had the privilege of volunteering for the Good Works Friday night meals.
Our walk not only helped us to empathize with those on the streets in the cold of winter, but it also educated us as to why these people are battling poverty and how we can help.

1st Praise Band Practice!!

One new development here at the Wright State Campus is that we are working on getting a Praise Band started. We would like to have large event Vesper worships on campus once a month. We had so much fun coming together this last weekend to Praise God in worship. We have a bass guitar, drummer, lead guitar, piano and lead female and male vocalist. We hope to kick off our first Vespers in March and to have them every 2nd Friday of the month with other Christian groups and even our Adventist collegiate groups are invited. :)

Ice Skating Social!

We had a cold and wonderful time Ice-skating this last week. It was definitely chilly, but we stayed warm as we raced around the ice-skating rink. It was a great time to socialize and spend some time together in Christian Fellowship. :)

Stillwater Church

I have been trying to spend time visiting churches this month. I created a video and spoke at Centerville the 1st of this month and the second weekend at Stillwater! It was an exciting and wonderful experiences and the churches were incredibly welcoming! :) I met 13 new Adventist students at these new churches.

Off and Running!

After a well-deserved and an over-to-soon break, our students at Ohio University and Hocking College have hit the ground running: starting new classes, experiencing new teachers, figuring out new schedules, and well into their second week of winter quarter.

Our ACF chapter started off well, having a good turnout of students this past Friday at our first Bible Study of the quarter. We spent some time reflecting on the past year, recollecting the lessons we learned in our Christian-Life-and-Journey Bible Study, identifying areas where we recognized God's presence, and thinking of how we have used these lessons and how they will affect our lives in 2011. We know that it is only by God's grace and spirit that we can see success, not necessarily defined by numbers but by a clearer understanding of who Jesus is, and that we start this new quarter with excited anticipation and hope of what we are going to learn this quarter.

In addition to our weekly Bible Studies, ACF will be organizing "The Upper Room", a weekly time of prayer and praise open to students and held at the Baker's Center on Tuesdays at 12:30pm. It is our hope that through The Upper Room, students can begin to experience the importance and impact of prayer. In addition, a prayer box will be available for students not only to leave their requests/praises, but for students to take a request/praise to pray for as well.

We are looking forward for what winter quarter has in store, and despite the chilly weather (We admit that the novelty is starting to slowly wear off for us Californians), our hearts are warm with excitement of what's to come! ACF is off and running :)

Community Service

On September 16 Ohio saw some bad weather - very bad. At least 8 tornadoes were confirmed throughout the state and Athens County, where some of the worst damage was done, saw four twisters. Trailer homes blew over while larger homes were torn apart and at least 200 people were left homeless. Adventist Community Services - Disaster Response was one of the organizations that was asked to help. Their role was to manage a warehouse and collect much needed donations for the storm victims. Starting all over again takes time. Almost four months later they are still working hard at sorting and organizing donations for redistribution. When the ACF group at OSU heard that volunteers were needed they decided to plan a trip down to Athens. December 26, the day after Christmas, several students along with area church and community members arrived at the warehouse run by Adventist Community Services to see what they could do to help. We prepared palettes of household necessities to be delivered to three different families who had lost everything in the storms. We also sorted, boxed, and labeled linens. We were grateful for the opportunity to serve and are looking forward to doing it again.

New Year's with Ethan Temple!

One of our Wright State students attends Ethan's Temple. It was nice to enjoy bringing in the New Year with their collegiate group while having a Vespers, eating haystacks(our Adventist joy) and watching The Ten Commandments. It was a fun filled night with great people!
